Alteration is adjusting a readymade or previously stitched garment so it fits correctly. At Nirmal Boutique in Sri Muktsar Sahib we size garments up or down, shorten or lengthen, reshape sleeves and necklines, do fall and pico, and replace zips and linings. Most standard alterations are completed the same day or within 24 hours. Bring the garment to Tibbi Sahib Road, Bagla Market, or call +91 98555 86300 to check timing.
Why It Matters
Almost Fitting Is Not Fitting
Readymade sizing is built for an average body, not yours. The shoulder pulls, the waist sits wide, the sleeve ends at the wrong place. Most people wear it anyway and quietly stop reaching for it.
Alteration is the cheapest way to get more out of clothes you already own. A kurti that is taken in at the waist and shortened by an inch stops looking borrowed and starts looking stitched for you.
Wear the garment when you come, so we mark on the body not on a table
We tell you upfront if a piece cannot be altered cleanly
Price quoted before any seam is opened
Same day work possible on standard jobs if you come early
Alteration Types
What We Can Change
Size Down
Taking in at the side seams, waist and bust so a loose garment follows your shape again.
Size Up
Letting out from the seam allowance where the fabric permits. We check first whether there is enough to work with.
Length
Kameez, kurti, salwar, plazo and gown lengths shortened or dropped, with the original hem style kept.
Sleeves
Sleeve length changed, sleeves narrowed, or the style changed from full to three quarter or short.
Neck Reshaping
Neckline opened, deepened or changed shape, with the finish rebuilt so it does not gape.
Fall and Pico
Saree fall attached and pico done along the edge. Related work on the piko and lace page.
Zip Replacement
Broken or stuck zips replaced with a matched zip from our munyari stock.
Lining Work
Torn linings replaced, or lining added to a fabric that is thinner than you expected once worn.
Before You Come
What to Bring
1
The Garment Itself
Clean and unpressed is fine. If it has been worn heavily, wash it first so the fit reads correctly.
2
The Right Innerwear
Fit changes with what you wear underneath, especially for fitted kurtis, blouses and gowns.
3
The Shoes You Will Wear
Only matters for length work on plazo, gowns and full length salwar. It saves a second trip.
4
Your Deadline
Tell us the date you need it. Same day is often possible if you come in the morning.
Timings assume normal shop load. During wedding season allow extra time, and confirm your date when you drop the garment off. Indicative charges are on the pricing page.
Questions
Alteration FAQs
Can you do alteration the same day?
Yes for standard jobs like hemming, length changes, taking in at the sides and saree fall and pico, provided you come in the morning. More involved work such as neck reshaping usually needs 24 to 48 hours.
Can a dress be made larger?
Sometimes. It depends on how much seam allowance was left inside the garment. We open the seam and check before quoting, and we will tell you straight if there is not enough fabric to work with.
Should I wear the dress when I come in?
Yes, please do, along with the innerwear and shoes you plan to wear with it. Marking on the body is far more accurate than measuring a garment flat on a table.
Do you alter heavily embroidered or bridal outfits?
Yes. Handwork has to be carefully opened and reset, so these take two to four days rather than a day. Details are on the bridal and party wear page.
How much does alteration cost?
It depends on the job and the garment. Indicative ranges are listed on the pricing page, and the exact price is quoted before any seam is opened.
Do you alter clothes bought elsewhere?
Yes. Most alteration work we do is on readymade pieces bought from other shops or online. You do not need to have had the garment stitched with us. If you would rather have something made from scratch, see suit stitching.
